Sunset cruise Miami: the best way to end a day on the water

There is a reason the sunset cruise is Miami’s most booked evening on the water. The sun drops behind the skyline, the bay turns gold, and for a couple of hours the noise of the city simply stops.

You can do it on a crowded tour boat. Or you can do it properly: a private yacht, your people, your music and a captain who times the route so you are in the right place when the sky lights up.

What to expect

A private sunset cruise usually lasts two or three hours and leaves about an hour to ninety minutes before sunset. The route often includes:

  • Star Island and the bay islands in golden light
  • A slow pass along the Brickell and downtown skyline as the lights come on
  • A calm spot to stop for the sunset itself — photos, a swim, a glass of champagne

It is unhurried, private and quiet. No strangers and no loudspeaker commentary.

The best routes

  • The Biscayne Bay classic — Star Island, the downtown skyline, sunset on the open bay. The route for a first evening in Miami.
  • Fisher Island at dusk — quieter water and island views in the last light.
  • Key Biscayne — a longer run with open views of the sunset and the city glowing behind you.
  • South Beach — depart from Miami Beach Marina, steps from the South Beach hotels, and watch the sun set behind the skyline across the bay.

Your captain adjusts the route for wind and weather — trust the local knowledge.

Private or shared

  • Group: on a private yacht it is only your people; on a tour boat, dozens of strangers.
  • Route and timing: yours to choose, rather than fixed.
  • Music, food and drinks: yours.
  • Price: for couples a shared ticket is cheaper; for a group of six or more, a private yacht often comes close per person — with an entirely different evening.

Our sunset-friendly yachts start at $850 for two hours, including captain and fuel. See all yachts for exact rates.

What to bring

  • A light layer — it cools down quickly on the water after sunset
  • Your playlist; most yachts have Bluetooth sound
  • Drinks and snacks — on most yachts you can bring your own, or we can arrange catering
  • A camera, if you have one — golden hour deserves it

When to go

Winter and spring bring the clearest skies and the most dramatic colour. Summer sunsets are beautiful too, and afternoon storms usually clear by evening. Miami has a good sunset almost every day of the year.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a sunset cruise?

Two hours is the classic. Three or four hours let you add a dinner stop on the Miami River or a night cruise along the skyline.

What time do we leave?

Usually an hour to ninety minutes before sunset. We set the exact time for your date when you book.

What if it is cloudy?

Clouds often make the best sunsets, because they catch the colour. We only cancel for unsafe weather, and then you can reschedule or receive a refund.

Can we swim?

On most yachts, yes — the bay is often calm in the evening, and many yachts carry floating mats. Ask the captain for the best spot.

Tell our concierge your date and the number of guests, and we will time it perfectly.
