The best sandbars in Miami: Haulover, Nixon and beyond
Miami’s sandbars are where a day on the water slows down. Here is how they differ, when to go, and which yacht suits each one.

A sandbar is a shallow stretch of the bay where the water is clear and waist-deep, and yachts anchor to swim, float and have lunch. Miami has several, and each has its own character.
Haulover Sandbar
North Biscayne Bay, just inside Haulover Inlet. This is Miami’s best-known sandbar and the liveliest: music, boats rafted together, a party atmosphere on weekends. The water is often the clearest in the bay on an incoming tide.
- Go if you want energy, a celebration or a bachelorette day.
- Timing: on weekends it fills up by late morning. Leave early to anchor in a good spot.

Nixon Sandbar
Near Key Biscayne, south of the city skyline. Calmer and more relaxed than Haulover, with views back to downtown. A favourite for families and for a slower day.
- Go if you want to swim, float and talk without shouting over music.
- Timing: good all day; the skyline views are best in the afternoon.

Further south: Biscayne National Park
On longer charters we head south to the quiet waters around Boca Chita and Elliott Key, inside Biscayne National Park. Fewer boats, clearer water, and a different, wilder feel. It takes longer to get there, so plan for six hours or more. We wrote a separate guide to Boca Chita and Elliott Key.
How to make the most of a sandbar day
- Four hours is the minimum for a real sandbar day: time to get there, anchor, swim and come back without rushing.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen, hats and water shoes. The bottom is sandy, but there can be shells and sea grass.
- Ask for water toys. A floating mat or a floating pool makes the stop. Many of our yachts carry them.
- Let the captain choose the spot. Depth, tide and wind change daily; the captain knows where the water is best that day.

Which yacht
For a sandbar, a yacht with a wide swim platform and sunpads matters more than size. Sport yachts like the Axopar 37 and Saxdor 320 GTO reach the shallows easily; larger flybridge yachts give shade and space for bigger groups.
